The cost per kilogram for airfreight from China to the United States is meaningful only when the chargeable weight and service scope are specified. Obtain a current quotation for the packed cargo and compare the full journey. An airport freight rate should not be presented as the delivered cost of a U.S. inventory shipment.
Identify what the kilogram represents
The billed quantity may exceed the cargo's physical weight because of volume or minimum-charge rules. Include pallets, crates and protective materials in the measurements. Ask the provider to state the calculation and rounding basis before using its rate in a unit-cost forecast.
For example, a hypothetical shipment weighing 140 kilograms might be charged on 200 kilograms under its actual dimensions and tariff. Multiplying the quoted rate by 140 would understate the freight component. This example demonstrates the billing relationship; it is not a claim about a current lane price.
Check whether a weight break affects the rate or minimum charge. A lower quoted per-kilogram figure can still produce a higher total if it applies to a different chargeable quantity or shipment commitment.
Break the quotation into a complete movement
Separate collection and China-side handling from airport carriage. Then identify U.S. terminal handling, clearance, delivery and any appointment or special-equipment requirement. Mark each item as included, excluded or awaiting confirmation.
Record the origin airport, destination airport, routing and delivery boundary. A shipment to a West Coast airport followed by inland transport has a different cost structure from an arrival near the consignee. The airport pair alone does not describe the customer's complete journey.
DHL Global Forwarding's U.S. airfreight information describes several service choices and coordinated transport activities. That range illustrates why a product name or a broad airfreight headline is insufficient for a specific booking comparison.
Keep U.S. import charges outside an invented flat markup
Classification, origin, customs value and applicable trade measures affect import charges. Broker and carrier service charges are separate from government duties. Identify the importer and declarant, and have them verify the applicable treatment for the actual product.
Do not assume that splitting commercial goods into small packages creates duty-free eligibility. The former U.S. de minimis treatment has been suspended, and low value does not itself establish admissibility or a tax exemption. Use current CBP guidance rather than an old small-parcel formula.
For the airfreight budget, keep the broker's confirmed tax assumptions visible and separate from the transport quote. A single percentage labelled customs can hide different bases and make a later invoice impossible to reconcile.
Decide whether air solves the inventory problem
Compare the incremental air cost with the avoidable cost of waiting. That might include a stockout, an interrupted production line or a missed committed delivery. Use the actual business consequence rather than assuming every faster arrival creates the same value.
A split replenishment can be worth evaluating. Send only the quantity needed to cover the immediate shortfall by air, while the balance follows a slower suitable route. Allow for extra preparation, duplicate documentation and separate delivery charges when comparing the options.
If FulfillNexa by SBT holds the inventory in China, the release quantity and packing instructions should be confirmed before the air booking is priced. Repacking after quotation can change both readiness and chargeable weight.
Budget for uncertainty transparently
Ask for the quotation's validity, capacity status and conditions for changes. Keep an allowance for unresolved charges as a visible planning assumption. Do not disguise that allowance as a current market rate or a guaranteed surcharge.
For a recurring lane, maintain a record of quoted versus billed totals, chargeable weights and door-delivery outcomes. Compare shipments with similar characteristics. One emergency shipment is a weak benchmark for routine replenishment.
Approve airfreight when the total accepted cost, documented import plan and required delivery outcome fit together. If the quote is still missing its destination scope, the per-kilogram number is not yet a basis for choosing between air and another transport method.
