Airfreight chargeable weight reflects both mass and the space occupied by packed cargo. Compare actual gross weight with the volumetric result under the booked tariff, then apply its rounding and minimum-charge rules. A supplier's product weight alone is not enough to predict the airfreight invoice.

Measure the shipment in its transport-ready form

Include cartons, protective packing, pallets and any external frame. Measure the greatest outer dimensions, including protrusions. A machine described as one metre long may occupy a larger space after its protective crate and lifting points are added.

Record dimensions and weights per piece rather than keeping only a shipment total. That makes it possible to check a carrier's remeasurement and identify which package created the difference. Photograph unusually shaped or nonstackable cargo before it leaves the packing location.

Use one measurement system consistently. Mixing centimetres and metres in the same formula can produce an error far larger than the freight margin being negotiated.

The divisor belongs to the service

IATA's explanation of air-cargo tariffs gives a general volumetric calculation using cubic centimetres divided by 6,000, with the higher of actual and volumetric weight used for pricing. The actual booked tariff still governs the shipment.

Express parcel services can use a different factor. DHL Express's dimensional-weight guidance describes its own charging approach. Do not transfer an express formula to airline cargo, or assume that every China-origin air service uses the same divisor.

Get the divisor, measurement rounding, weight rounding and minimum billable quantity in writing. Ask whether the calculation is per piece or aggregated, and whether special handling changes the chargeable basis.

A box can have two different chargeable results

Take an illustrative carton measuring 50 by 40 by 30 centimetres and weighing 8 kilograms gross. Its volume is 60,000 cubic centimetres. Under a divisor of 6,000, the volumetric result is 10 kilograms. Under a divisor of 5,000, it is 12 kilograms.

Both results exceed the physical 8 kilograms. The example explains the calculation; it does not establish a rate or a universal divisor. Any tariff rounding must still be applied after the relevant calculation.

For dense cargo, actual weight can be the controlling figure. Reducing empty space then may not reduce chargeable weight until the volumetric result changes the applicable basis. Calculate before paying for a redesign that cannot affect the quoted transport cost.

Pallets and nonstackable cargo need another check

A pallet changes both gross weight and outside dimensions. Cartons that overhang its edges can be measured by the overhang, not just the pallet footprint. A top frame or protective cone can also affect usable transport space.

Nonstackable cargo may have additional charging or acceptance conditions. A simple volume calculation cannot prove the final price when the provider must reserve otherwise unusable space. Request a quotation based on the declared stacking restriction and loading arrangement.

For warehouse preparation at FulfillNexa by SBT, ask for the final packed piece list after consolidation or palletization. A measurement taken before the last carton is added cannot validate the completed shipment's chargeable weight.

Optimize packaging without creating another loss

Look for avoidable void space, unnecessarily tall pallets and packaging that can be standardized across orders. Evaluate whether repacking labor and new materials cost less than the transport saving on the actual quoted service.

Maintain the protection required for the goods and handling method. Compressing soft products may be sensible, while removing a structural insert from fragile equipment may shift cost from freight to damage and claims.

Trial one transport-ready package and measure it again. Use the verified new dimensions in the quotation instead of estimating that a smaller design will save a fixed percentage.

Resolve a weight adjustment with records

When billed weight differs, request the measured piece dimensions, gross weights and rule used. Compare them with the packing record and quotation. Check for rounding, a different divisor, an added pallet or a minimum charge before alleging an error.

The useful outcome is a reproducible calculation. Anyone reviewing the file should be able to start with the same packed pieces and arrive at the same chargeable weight under the agreed tariff.
