Choose the sourcing model that solves the actual constraint
Moving beyond AliExpress can help a seller gain more control over product specifications, packaging, and replenishment. It can also introduce minimum purchases, inspection work, and responsibility for stock. The useful alternative depends on what is failing in the present operation: inconsistent items, unavailable variants, weak records, or a need for branded inventory.
Compare sourcing models before comparing company names. A marketplace merchant, a sourcing agent, a manufacturer, and a fulfillment warehouse perform different jobs. Some businesses combine those roles, but the contract should still make clear who sells the goods, who owns them, and who is responsible when they are wrong.
A wholesale supplier trades flexibility for clearer purchasing
A wholesaler may offer repeatable SKU lists and purchase terms, but stock figures need verification. Ask whether the quoted product is held as finished stock or bought from another business after your payment. Request an invoice that identifies the selling entity and the specific variant.
Check whether the supplier supports single-unit dispatch or expects cartons to be purchased. If you buy in bulk, determine where the stock will be stored and how discrepancies at receipt are resolved. A lower unit price can be offset by unsold variants or a separate picking fee.
Existing product documentation should match the actual model. A catalog containing a familiar brand or a compliance logo does not establish authorization or conformity. Obtain the relevant evidence before offering the product in a destination market.
An agent should make its scope and compensation visible
A sourcing agent can locate factories, coordinate samples, and consolidate purchases. Ask which of those services the fee includes and whether the agent is acting for the buyer or reselling goods in its own name. Hidden differences between those arrangements make quality claims and refunds harder to resolve.
Require an approval process for substitutes. A buyer who approves one organizer should not receive a visually similar model because the original became unavailable. The agent should preserve specifications, sample decisions, supplier details where contractually available, and inspection records.
Agree what happens if the agent relationship ends. You may need product files, inventory records, unused packaging, and the ability to transfer stock. Access to those records should be resolved before the agent becomes the only person who knows how the product is sourced.
Direct manufacturing is a product-development commitment
A factory relationship can support custom materials, dimensions, or packaging. It also requires more precise drawings, tolerances, tooling ownership, and change control. A factory's minimum order quantity may apply separately to each color or component rather than to the whole product family.
Distinguish ownership of a mold from rights to a design or brand. Put approved artwork and intellectual-property terms in writing. For US branding, the USPTO's clearance guidance explains why a trademark search extends beyond finding an identical name.
Plan inspection before production finishes. Define the acceptance criteria and remedy for a failed lot. A discussion about defects is easier when both sides agreed on the test beforehand rather than after the buyer has paid to ship the goods abroad.
A 3PL changes fulfillment, not necessarily sourcing
A China-based 3PL can receive goods from several suppliers, count them, store approved inventory, and dispatch individual orders. That does not automatically make it the manufacturer or the party responsible for product compliance. Confirm the services included and the limits of receiving inspection.
This model can make mixed baskets and branded packing more manageable, but it requires inventory ownership and replenishment decisions. Shopify describes third-party fulfillment services as services that prepare and ship on a merchant's behalf; the merchant still needs a working commercial relationship with its product supplier.
Compare candidates using the same sample order, specification, destination, and exception scenario. Ask each to explain a stock shortage, a damaged receipt, and a return. Select the arrangement whose responsibilities and records you can verify, rather than assuming that leaving a marketplace guarantees a better supply chain.
