An Australian destination postcode is not enough to establish whether a product can enter the country. Materials, composition and intended use can change the import conditions that need to be checked.

Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry directs importers to BICON for biosecurity import conditions. The relevant product pathway should be identified before goods are packed into a consolidated dispatch.

Build a product-and-materials intake

Ask the supplier for the item model, composition, intended use and any natural materials. Record packaging materials separately. For a product with several variants, identify which variant the importer is assessing rather than keeping one generic approval note for the whole listing.

The importer or responsible specialist should identify the relevant current BICON pathway and any other product requirements. Keep the result tied to the supplied facts. A screenshot of an unrelated permitted product does not close the review.

Compare transport after the product question

Proposed Australia movementDecision before bookingInformation carried forward
Direct air parcelWhether that service accepts the exact item and packRequired electronic description and supporting documents
Consolidated air freightWhether all product lines in the lot are cleared for the proposed arrangementA line-level review record and the filing party's requirements
Ocean replenishmentGoods and non-commodity packaging conditions for the finished loadPacking materials, declarations and the current destination review

Changing from air to ocean should not be presented as a way to avoid biosecurity conditions. The product and packaging facts remain relevant.

Cost the review, not an imagined clearance outcome

Use hypothetical inputs of five material queries at 12 minutes each and a 20-minute packaging review. At an assumed US$30/hour specialist coordination cost, the planned review work is (5 × 12 + 20) ÷ 60 × $30 = $40. If two lines require eight additional minutes each, the model adds $8 and reaches $48.

No inspection fee, permit fee or treatment price is represented by that total. Enter those only if the responsible provider or authority has established their applicability and basis.

The release checklist should say which lines have a completed assessment and which are still waiting. If a line remains unresolved, obtain a buyer decision to hold or split the goods and then reconcile the physical contents and documents. Keeping the exception visible is more useful than a general note saying the shipment is for Australia.
