A container-weight worksheet built only from product weights leaves out material that travels with the cargo. Pallets, protective timber and securing material can create a gap between the worksheet and the packed unit.
IMO's verified gross mass guidance describes permitted approaches to establishing a packed container's gross mass. Where an approved calculation method is used, the relevant packing and securing materials and container tare are part of the calculation.
Reconcile the packing record to the chosen VGM method
Confirm who is responsible for providing VGM and which permitted method will be used. If the load uses a certified calculation method, obtain the actual cargo, pallet, dunnage, securing-material and container-tare inputs required by that method. If the packed container is weighed, retain the relevant weighing evidence through the responsible party's process.
The warehouse should notify that party when packing changes. A crate added late to the load is a change to the final packed mass, not merely a document note.
A mass check and a separate work-cost example
Take fictional masses of 4,800 kg for goods, 120 kg for pallets, 80 kg for dunnage and securing material, and 2,200 kg of container tare. Their sum is 7,200 kg. This arithmetic illustrates why goods-only weight is incomplete; it is not a VGM certificate or an instruction to use unverified inputs.
For budgeting the record preparation, assume a quoted weighing task of US$45 and 30 minutes of document coordination at an internal $24/hour. The modeled administration and weighing budget is $57. Both monetary inputs are placeholders selected for the example, not terminal fees or a FulfillNexa quotation.
Do not apply a container requirement to every movement
| Movement | Relevant weight handover |
|---|---|
| Packed container within the applicable SOLAS scope | The responsible shipper supplies compliant VGM through the agreed channel |
| LCL cargo handed to a consolidator | Supply accurate cargo and packing mass; confirm the consolidator's role in the packed-container process |
| Air freight or parcel service | Follow that service's gross-weight and billing requirements rather than calling the record VGM |
Before release, retain the submission acknowledgment and check that it refers to the correct booking and container. Providing VGM remains distinct from meeting documentation, terminal and cargo-acceptance requirements. A mathematically balanced worksheet cannot establish that every loading condition has been met.
