China-to-U.S. shipping time should be measured from an agreed starting event to an agreed delivery event. Compare express, air, sea and combined services on that same basis. A main-leg transit figure cannot be used as the full customer lead time when preparation, import release and final delivery sit outside it.
Choose the clock that answers the customer's question
An ecommerce customer often measures from checkout to delivery. A purchasing team may measure from cargo-ready confirmation to warehouse receipt. A carrier product can measure from acceptance to a specified endpoint. Those are different clocks.
Record the start and end event for each promise. If warehouse preparation happens before carrier acceptance, include it in the customer-facing lead time even when it is absent from the carrier's transit estimate.
FulfillNexa by SBT's China-side receipt, preparation and dispatch milestones should therefore remain distinguishable from the international transport milestones. A stock allocation or printed label is not an aircraft departure.
Read the service estimate at the correct level
| Service being compared | Timing questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Integrated express | Collection cutoff, acceptance, destination postcode and delivery commitment |
| Conventional air cargo | Cargo acceptance, confirmed flight, release and onward delivery |
| FCL sea freight | Loading and terminal cutoffs, vessel movement, release and receiving appointment |
| LCL sea freight | Consolidation cutoff, main carriage, deconsolidation and collection availability |
| Combined service | Each transfer, connection responsibility and final delivery boundary |
Populate the timing fields from current offers and operating information. Do not fill a 2026 comparison with generic day ranges copied from another route or a past shipment.
FedEx's China freight-service page distinguishes products and delivery arrangements. Its typical product information still needs to be checked against the actual origin, destination and shipment acceptance.
Separate scheduled, confirmed and completed events
A schedule describes an intended movement. A booking confirmation establishes a particular reservation and its conditions. An actual departure record establishes that the shipment moved. Keep those states separate in the tracking system and customer messages.
The same distinction matters at arrival. Vessel or aircraft arrival does not prove customs release, and customs release does not prove delivery. For a warehouse shipment, the receiving appointment and check-in can be another step after the truck reaches the area.
When a provider revises an estimate, record the affected milestone and reason. Replacing the final delivery date without that explanation makes the underlying bottleneck hard to identify.
Identify the delay the business can prevent
Late production, missing documents, wrong packed dimensions and an incomplete consignee address are different from a missed transport connection. Track them separately because they call for different corrective actions.
Prepare the import information early enough for the responsible broker or declarant to review it. Check product classification, origin, valuation, required permissions and payer details. A premium transport service cannot guarantee immediate release when those questions remain unanswered.
At destination, confirm opening hours, appointment rules and unloading needs. A shipment delivered to a closed site can lose the time saved on the main leg.
Set buffers using comparable shipments
Maintain a lane record using consistent start and end events. Separate service codes, destinations and commodity profiles. A single fast sample or a delayed exceptional shipment is not a dependable planning standard.
Look at the distribution, not only the average. If most shipments arrive near the target but a few take much longer, the business may need an exception plan or inventory buffer. Choose that buffer against the cost of a stockout rather than advertising the best observed result as the standard.
Carrier operating calendars also matter. UPS's China holiday schedule demonstrates why public-holiday adjustments should be checked for the selected service. Another provider can operate differently.
Turn the comparison into a release decision
For each SKU, compare stock available at destination with expected demand until usable replenishment arrives. If only a small quantity is urgent, price a partial expedited release alongside the normal movement.
The resulting shipping-time estimate should tell the customer what is included, which event has actually happened and when the next update will be triggered. That is more useful than a fixed day claim that cannot survive a different postcode or an unresolved receiving appointment.
