Eco-friendly packaging for China shipments should be assessed through specific material and disposal claims, together with product protection. Replacing plastic with paper does not automatically establish lower overall impact if the new design increases weight, damage or replacement shipments.
Ask which attribute is being claimed and which evidence supports it in the destination market. “Green packaging” is too broad to serve as either a purchasing specification or a reliable customer statement.
Separate three commonly confused claims
Recycled content concerns the material input. Recyclability concerns the package’s compatibility with an actual collection and processing route. Compostability concerns breakdown under defined conditions. Evidence for one does not establish the others.
The FTC’s Green Guides summary explains qualification and substantiation of environmental marketing claims. For US-facing statements, evaluate the full package and the disposal conditions rather than assuming a technically recyclable material can be recycled by every customer.
A paper mailer with coatings, windows, adhesive or mixed components needs review as the supplied finished design. A supplier’s certificate for one raw material should not be stretched into a claim about every component of the pack.
Read certifications for what they establish
Verify the issuing scheme, certificate identity, relevant scope and the specific material supplied. Ask how the supplier connects its documentation to the delivered batch and printed claim.
FSC’s paper and packaging guidance concerns forest-based sourcing and chain-of-custody certification. An FSC-related claim should be used according to that scheme; it does not, by itself, prove home compostability or collection access in the customer’s city.
Keep unverified logos off artwork. If a claim changes, update the approved print version and identify remaining old stock so the warehouse does not mix contradictory statements in the same campaign.
Check the destination’s current packaging requirements
For the EU, Regulation 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste begins applying in phases from 12 August 2026. The European Commission’s packaging-waste page is the official starting point for the current framework.
Do not treat every future requirement or deadline as already applicable to every package. Determine the responsible economic operator, packaging category, destination obligations and relevant implementation dates with the appropriate compliance owner.
US environmental marketing guidance and EU packaging rules answer different questions. A pack can require review under both where the business sells into both markets.
Compare a functional package, not just a material sample
Create a material bill for the finished order and measure its weight and dimensions. Include cushioning, tape, labels and printed inserts. Then test whether the proposed configuration still protects the product on the intended route.
An illustrative design reduces packaging material from 180 grams to 140 grams per order. That is a measured-material scenario, not proof of a 22% reduction in environmental impact. The evaluation still needs the materials’ attributes, disposal conditions and effect on damage or replacement work.
If a lighter design increases product breakage, the extra product and transport burden must be considered. Avoid claiming a total carbon saving without an appropriate defined assessment and evidence.
Turn buyer preferences into an approved specification
Ask customers or procurement teams which attributes they require: a verified recycled-content claim, removal of a particular component, a specific certification or compatibility with a destination collection route. Do not invent a market-wide preference percentage from a few informal requests.
Agree the pack’s protection standard, allowed materials, approved claims and print version. Keep the supporting documents with the supplier and batch records.
The warehouse’s job is then observable: use the approved configuration, prevent substitutions and report shortages or changes. A credible environmental packaging program ends with a specific defensible claim and a protected product, rather than an attractive label that says more than its evidence can support.
