LCL shipping lets a China-origin shipment share container space with other cargo. Evaluate the complete consolidation service, including receiving, measurement, export handling, arrival deconsolidation and delivery. A low rate per cubic metre can be misleading when minimums and destination charges are not included in the comparison.
Understand what is being consolidated
Maersk describes LCL as sharing space in a container. For the seller, the relevant purchase is access to a scheduled consolidation and its handling network, rather than exclusive use of a container.
Identify the receiving warehouse or container freight station, cargo cutoff, consolidation departure and destination release location. Ask whether the movement is direct or involves a transfer. Those details determine the handling chain and the practical delivery plan.
Goods can encounter more handling than a shipment loaded into a dedicated container at origin. Packaging should therefore suit the actual receiving and consolidation process, with clear identification and suitable protection.
Measure before requesting a price
Provide the dimensions and gross weight of every transport-ready piece. Include pallets and nonstackable restrictions. A supplier's estimate of product volume can differ from the space occupied by the delivered cargo.
Check how the tariff defines weight and measure. Maersk's LCL terms give an example using CBM or weight-and-measure units and a stated relationship between volume and gross weight. That contract's basis should not be assumed to govern every consolidator.
Ask for the minimum charge, rounding and any handling surcharge for oversized or heavy pieces. If a quotation has a minimum of one charging unit, a smaller shipment may still be billed at that minimum. Confirm the actual rule rather than presenting one CBM as a universal entitlement or threshold.
Compare the complete LCL invoice structure
Separate origin receipt and handling, export documentation, ocean movement, destination handling, release and final delivery. Record the charging unit for each line. Charges per booking, per document and per volume unit behave differently as the shipment gets larger.
An apparently inexpensive main-leg rate can coexist with substantial fixed arrival charges. That does not establish wrongdoing; it means the full service has to be priced before comparing it with another route.
Use one receiving endpoint for all offers. A quotation ending at the destination consolidation warehouse is incomplete if the buyer needs stock delivered to a fulfillment center with an appointment.
Protect identification through the shared journey
Keep carton marks consistent with the booking and packing list. Avoid reusing old labels that can send cartons to the wrong consignment. For multiple suppliers, establish which cartons belong to each purchase order and product before consolidation.
For China-side preparation by FulfillNexa by SBT, request a release list showing the pieces handed to the LCL provider. An internal stock count should not be substituted for the outward shipment count after repacking or palletization.
Discuss restricted or hazardous contents with the consolidator before delivery to its facility. Acceptance of ordinary consumer goods does not establish acceptance of a battery, liquid or other regulated product configuration.
Build the timeline around release, not just sailing
The seller's full lead time includes cargo readiness, consolidation waiting, main carriage, deconsolidation, import release and final delivery. A vessel transit figure describes only part of that sequence.
Confirm how the provider communicates cutoff changes, missed consolidations and arrival availability. Ask who receives and acts on document requests. A buyer without a destination broker or receiving contact needs that gap resolved before departure.
Use an inventory buffer based on the lane's observed end-to-end outcomes and the business's tolerance for delay. Do not turn an indicative timetable into an unconditional delivery promise.
Know when to request an FCL comparison
As cargo grows, request a matched FCL quotation as well. Compare total delivery cost, handling, inventory exposure and equipment availability. The crossover depends on cargo shape, density and the quoted charges, so a fixed global CBM threshold is not reliable.
LCL is most useful when the shared service fits the shipment's size and cadence without leaving its arrival responsibilities unresolved. Confirm those responsibilities before treating the main-leg unit rate as the cost of importing the goods.
