Follow one unit from purchase to delivery
One-piece dropshipping from China means fulfilling an individual customer order without requiring that customer to buy a wholesale carton. The supplier or fulfillment provider picks and dispatches the unit on the seller's behalf. It does not necessarily mean the seller has no inventory commitment: some services purchase after each sale, while others dispatch from stock the seller already owns.
Clarify that distinction before comparing prices. A per-order procurement service may include time to obtain the item. A stocked service needs an earlier receiving and replenishment process. Both can dispatch single units, but their cash requirements, stock risks, and processing times differ.
Convert the order into an unambiguous picking instruction
The store sends the ordered SKU, variant, quantity, approved delivery details, and any permitted customization. A product photograph is supporting information, not a substitute for a stable identifier. If an order contains several items, each line needs a defined source and packaging instruction.
Hold the order when information is incomplete. Missing apartment details, an unmapped variant, or a restricted destination should not be resolved by warehouse guesswork. Record the correction and make sure it reaches the picking operation before the parcel is closed.
Separate payment acceptance from release. The warehouse should receive a clear signal that the order is authorized for fulfillment, including any stock and risk checks the seller requires. Repeated notifications must not create repeated dispatches.
Understand what happens before the unit is packed
For supplier-led procurement, the provider first confirms availability and obtains the item. For stocked fulfillment, it reserves an available unit. Goods awaiting inspection or held for a defect should not be counted as available simply because they are physically present.
The agreed check may cover identity, visible damage, completeness, or specific measurements. Document its limits. A visual check does not establish that a children's product meets testing requirements or that a liquid is safe for a particular transport service.
If the wrong product arrives at the fulfillment facility, pause the order and obtain a resolution. Sending a similar item to avoid a delay creates a mismatch with the customer's contract and can lead to a more expensive return.
Pack for the actual parcel journey
Use an approved packing method suitable for a single unit, including protection from movement and foreseeable handling. Multiple items may need separators. A retail box alone may not be sufficient mailing protection.
Weigh and measure the finished package rather than the bare product. The selected carrier service must accept the goods and serve the address. Customs information should describe the actual items, origin, and value accurately; ordinary customer purchases should not be labeled as gifts to seek different treatment.
Record label creation separately from physical carrier acceptance. The customer-facing tracking message should describe the event that occurred. If a destination carrier issues another number, link it to the original order.
Make fees and exceptions understandable
Ask for the charge unit for procurement, receiving, storage, picking, additional items, packaging, freight, and returns. A “one-piece price” may exclude several of these. Compare a typical basket and an exception, not only the cheapest single unit.
Agree how cancellations, address changes, stockouts, and delivery failures are handled. Shopify's fulfillment guidance describes fulfillment as an order-processing workflow; the physical operation still needs its own stop points and confirmations.
After delivery, link refunds or replacement orders to the original record. This keeps order profitability and inventory accurate. A workable single-unit operation produces a traceable chain from the purchased variant to the dispatched package, with clear decisions when that chain cannot proceed as planned.
