Choosing FCL or LCL for sea freight from China to the United States requires a full delivered comparison. FCL buys use of a container; LCL buys a share of a consolidation service. The cheaper option depends on cargo, handling, destination charges and the importer’s receiving plan, not a universal cubic-metre threshold.
Compare the shipment as it will leave China
Use final carton or pallet dimensions, gross weight and stacking restrictions. Include protective packing. A volume estimate before palletization can make LCL appear cheaper than it will be after the cargo is measured.
Consider whether the goods can be consolidated safely with other cargo. Fragile products, irregular shapes and goods needing special handling may change acceptance or packing requirements. An exclusive container still needs proper loading and securing; exclusivity is not a substitute for that work.
Maersk's FCL-versus-LCL guidance makes the choice dependent on cargo. Its explanation should not be converted into a guaranteed crossover point for all China–U.S. shipments.
Calculate two totals with the same endpoint
For the FCL option, include origin handling, the container movement, U.S. release, inland transport and equipment-return responsibilities where applicable. For LCL, include consolidation receipt, the shared movement, deconsolidation, release and delivery.
Use the same warehouse address and receiving conditions. A comparison between FCL door delivery and LCL collection from a container freight station is incomplete. Obtain the missing activity prices before drawing a cost conclusion.
Keep duties, taxes and broker charges visible in both models. They depend on the goods and entry arrangement rather than simply on whether the cargo travels in a full or shared container.
Understand the handling difference
LCL generally requires the shipment to join and leave a shared consolidation. Ask how pieces are received, identified and released, and what protection is required for that chain.
FCL can reduce some cargo-level handovers when it is loaded and unloaded as a dedicated shipment. However, collection, terminal operations and final unloading still require coordination. A poorly packed dedicated container can create damage or receiving problems of its own.
For a mixed-SKU shipment prepared by FulfillNexa by SBT in China, keep the outward packing list and carton marks consistent with the chosen movement. Switching between LCL pallets and an FCL load can change the piece count, dimensions and dispatch documentation.
Assess arrival exposure before departure
For FCL, confirm release requirements, pickup arrangements, free time and the empty-return plan. For LCL, confirm availability after deconsolidation, collection requirements and applicable storage terms. Do not assume that a container’s vessel arrival is the date every LCL consignment becomes collectable.
The Federal Maritime Commission's detention and demurrage guidance is relevant to U.S. ocean-shipping practices. The actual tariff and contract still determine which event and charge need to be examined. A service choice should not depend on an invented universal free-time allowance.
Identify the person responsible for responding to a document request. A buyer that learns about missing import information after arrival has fewer ways to prevent delay-related costs.
Include inventory cadence in the decision
Waiting to fill a container can reduce the transport cost per unit while delaying the stock the business needs. More frequent LCL shipments may reduce that wait, but their fixed handling charges can accumulate.
Use the actual sales and replenishment pattern. Compare a planned full-container cycle with smaller shipments over the same period, including stock held in China, stock in transit and stock available at destination. Treat inventory carrying costs as business assumptions rather than carrier tariffs.
No option wins every dimension. A business may accept a higher transport cost to reduce stockout exposure, or accept more inventory in transit to simplify a recurring large movement.
Make the decision reproducible
Save the two quotations, measurement record, customs assumptions and receiving plan together. State why the selected arrangement fits this shipment. When the next order changes size or packaging, update the comparison instead of inheriting the previous choice automatically.
That approach turns FCL versus LCL from a rule of thumb into a shipment decision that the purchasing, warehouse and finance teams can all check.
