A main product listed as battery-free can still travel with a battery-powered accessory. The transport review needs to cover the complete sales pack, not just the largest item.
IATA's shipping guidance treats battery identification as part of preparation. The warehouse intake file should therefore list everything included in the dispatchable unit, including remote controls, lights or promotional accessories.
Check the complete pack-out, including gifts
List every component of the customer offer and ask the supplier to confirm which items contain batteries. Include promotional accessories and any optional items added at packing. The product record should identify the approved contents revision, not just the main item's SKU.
At intake, compare the supplier's component list with the approved pack. An unexpected powered accessory should become a visible exception for qualified review. Do not ask a picker to determine its transport classification from appearance.
Quantify the scope of a bundle correction
Imagine a hypothetical batch of 80 kits. A merchant authorizes removing an unapproved promotional accessory before transport review of the remaining contents. Assume removal and recount take two minutes per kit at US$24/hour, with replacement packaging materials of $0.25 per kit. The administrative rework model is 80 × (2 ÷ 60 × $24 + $0.25) = $84.
This is not a battery-handling procedure or an actual rework quotation. Any work involving the accessory itself must follow the applicable trained handling and disposition process. Removing it also does not establish that the remaining pack is automatically acceptable for carriage.
How the route affects the contents check
For direct parcel orders, an optional gift can change only some orders; the order-to-pack mapping needs to show which ones. In a consolidated air shipment, keep the affected line distinguishable so the reviewer can assess the declared contents and proposed grouping. For ocean freight, obtain the appropriate mode-specific assessment rather than treating the accessory as ordinary cargo because the main product is unpowered.
After the merchant approves a corrected offer, withdraw the old pack-out instruction and recount the affected stock under the agreed scope. Update dimensions, gross weight and commercial descriptions where changed. Keep the removed quantity traceable so it cannot be added to another order informally and recreate the same problem.
